How to clean and report bathroom mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

The grout between the tiles in our master bathroom shower has been turning black for a while, but now I’ve noticed fuzzy greyish patches on the ceiling and wall behind the toilet. It’s been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the ventilation fan isn't that strong. What’s the most effective way to clean this myself, and is this something I absolutely need to report to my landlord in Dubai?

The black grout is likely surface mold, but fuzzy grey patches on walls and ceilings suggest active growth in high-moisture conditions common in Dubai bathrooms. Start by improving ventilation; run the fan during and for 30 minutes after showers, and consider a portable dehumidifier. For cleaning, wear a mask and gloves. Use a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated EPA-approved mold cleaner. Scrub the grout and affected surfaces, but avoid bleach—it only removes surface color and can worsen the problem by adding moisture.

If the mold returns quickly, or if the wall feels soft or damp, the issue is likely behind the surface. In Dubai's humidity, this is common when poor ventilation allows condensation inside walls. Persistent or recurring mold, especially with a musty smell, indicates a deeper problem requiring professional assessment to find the hidden moisture source.

Under Dubai rental law (RERA), landlords must provide habitable premises, which includes functional ventilation. If the mold is extensive, recurring despite cleaning, or linked to a broken extraction fan or water leak, you should report it in writing to your landlord. They are typically responsible for repairs to the building's structure and fixed systems, like ventilation. For minor, surface-only mold that cleans easily, it's often considered routine tenant maintenance. Document everything with photos before cleaning and after, especially if you need to make a formal request for the landlord to address the underlying cause.
