Could my child's cough be from hidden mold?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past month and we can't seem to shake it. I finally pulled our sofa away from the wall in our Jumeirah villa and found a huge patch of black mold growing on the back where the AC vent blows condensation. We’ve been breathing this in for who knows how long. Could this be the cause of their constant coughs and should I be panicking about their health?

It's very possible the mold behind your sofa is contributing to your children's persistent coughs. In Dubai's climate, this is a common scenario where AC condensation creates a damp microclimate perfect for mold growth, especially behind furniture placed against exterior walls. The continuous airflow from the vent then aerosolizes the spores, distributing them throughout the room for you to breathe in.
You should be concerned, but not panic. Mold exposure, particularly over a sustained period, is a well-documented irritant to the respiratory system. It commonly causes coughing, congestion, and worsened allergy or asthma symptoms. The immediate priority is to stop the exposure. Move the sofa away from the wall and avoid disturbing the patch, which can release a large number of spores. Increase ventilation in the room by opening windows if the outdoor humidity is low. For a situation of this scale and with health symptoms already present, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can assess the extent of the growth, identify the mold species through lab analysis to understand its potential health impacts, and locate the moisture source—whether it's a clogged condensate drain line from the AC, high humidity, or a seepage issue. Remediation must address the root cause, or the mold will simply return. In many Dubai villas, this involves servicing the AC system to ensure proper drainage alongside safely removing the contaminated materials. |
