Should I remove closet mold myself or contact management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, on the wall that faces the outside. It wasn't there during the last cleaning a month ago, and I'm worried it might be spreading. The room has been feeling more humid than usual lately. What's the most effective way to handle this myself, or should I contact the building management first?

Given Dubai's high humidity, that black patch is likely from condensation forming on the cooler exterior wall. A small area (less than one square meter) can often be handled yourself. Start by mixing a solution of 80% water and 20% white vinegar. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, scrub the area, and let it dry completely. The most critical step is to identify and control the moisture source. Run a dehumidifier in the room and ensure the AC is set to a consistently cool temperature to reduce humidity.

However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if the patch is large, or if you notice a musty smell, the issue is likely inside the wall cavity. This is very common when exterior wall insulation gets wet. In such cases, DIY cleaning is only a temporary surface fix. For any suspected internal growth, you must contact building management. Dubai Law No. 11 of 2003 and the Strata Law place the responsibility for structural and common element repairs, including external walls and leaks, on the building owner or management. They should send a professional to conduct an inspection, which is the only way to assess the full extent. A proper remediation plan involves identifying the leak source, removing affected materials if necessary, and ensuring the wall is dried and sealed to prevent recurrence.
