Mold behind wardrobe causing kids' cough: doctor visit needed?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it might be from a patch of black mold I just found behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed it now, probably because we finally moved the heavy furniture after last month's unusual humidity. Should I be rushing them to a doctor or is treating the mold enough to resolve their symptoms?

Yes, a doctor visit is advisable. While treating the mold is essential, a persistent cough in children should be medically evaluated to rule out other causes and provide immediate relief. The mold is likely a significant contributor, especially if their symptoms worsen at home.

The patch behind the wardrobe is a classic sign of condensation buildup, common in Dubai due to our high humidity and year-round AC use. Walls behind large furniture become cold spots where moisture condenses, creating an ideal environment for mold. Given it's been there for up to two years, the colony is established and likely releasing spores into your bedroom's air.

For your children's health, prioritize both actions. Schedule a doctor's appointment to address their current symptoms. Concurrently, arrange for a professional mold inspection. A certified inspector can assess the full extent of the growth, even inside the wall cavity, and identify the species. Certain types, like Stachybotrys (the "black mold" often referred to), can produce mycotoxins that are particularly irritating to the respiratory systems of children.

Do not attempt to scrub it yourself, as this can aerosolize a high concentration of spores. A remediation expert will contain the area, safely remove the contaminated materials, and correct the moisture source—usually by improving ventilation. Until it's handled, keep the children out of the room and ensure your home's AC drain lines and drip pans are clear to reduce overall indoor humidity.
