Should I test my kids for mold exposure?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop and waking up with stuffy noses for the last month. I finally checked behind our wardrobe in the master bedroom and found a huge patch of black mold on the wall, probably from a hidden leak in the AC pipe. We live in a villa in Jumeirah and I’m worried this is making them sick. Should I take them to a doctor for a specific test because of this mold exposure?

Yes, you should have them evaluated by a pediatrician and mention the mold discovery. The symptoms you describe—persistent cough and nighttime congestion—are common reactions to mold exposure, especially in children. The doctor can assess if their symptoms are allergic rhinitis or could indicate a more significant respiratory response.

While there are blood tests for mold antibodies (like IgG or IgE tests for specific species), they are not always definitive for diagnosis. A physician will primarily treat the symptoms and may recommend tests to rule out other common childhood respiratory issues. The most critical action is to stop the exposure.

Given the climate in Dubai, where high humidity and constant AC use can lead to hidden condensation leaks, this situation is unfortunately common in villas. The mold behind your wardrobe indicates a persistent moisture source, likely from a leaking AC drain pipe or condensation buildup within the wall.

Before any remediation, a professional inspection is key to identify the exact moisture source. Simply cleaning the visible patch won't solve the problem if the leak continues. A proper assessment will map the extent of the mold, often using moisture meters and borescopes to see inside cavities, and then a remediation plan can be made to fix the leak, remove the contaminated materials, and restore healthy air quality. For a case of this severity, with visible growth and affected occupants, a DIY approach is not recommended.
