Is closet mold in my apartment an urgent problem?« Back to Previous Page

The master bedroom closet in my Jumeirah apartment has had this musty smell for weeks, but I just pulled out a stack of winter clothes and found several sweaters with dark greenish-black spots on them. The weather has been so humid lately. Is this something I need to deal with immediately, or can I just clean the clothes and get to it next week?

Yes, this is urgent. The visible mold on clothes confirms an active growth problem in your closet, and the musty smell indicates it has been established for some time. In Dubai's high humidity, especially during summer and the recent humid weather, mold will continue to spread rapidly if the moisture source isn't addressed.

Your immediate priority is to stop the spread. Remove all affected clothing and items from the closet. For washable fabrics like cotton sweaters, a hot wash with detergent can remove the mold, but it may not remove stains or embedded spores. Dry cleaning is often more effective for delicate items. Seal these items in a plastic bag before transporting them to prevent contaminating other areas.

The root cause is almost certainly excess moisture. In sealed apartments with year-round AC, this is frequently due to condensation. Check if an AC vent is directly blowing cold air onto the back of the closet wall, creating a cold surface where humid air condenses. Alternatively, a small water leak from a pipe in the wall could be the source.

Simply cleaning the clothes will not solve the problem; the reservoir of mold is within the closet itself. Wipe down all interior surfaces with a diluted vinegar or detergent solution, but be aware this only addresses surface growth. For a confirmed infestation, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the exact moisture source and extent of growth, as mold can thrive behind baseboards or within the wall cavity. They can also perform targeted cleaning to prevent recurrence, which is common if the underlying issue isn't resolved.
