How to remove and prevent black mold in Dubai AC wardrobe?« Back to Previous Page

We’ve lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the back of the bedroom wardrobe on the outside wall. It’s been so humid lately, and I'm worried the condensation from the AC is making it worse. What’s the most effective way to clean this and prevent it from coming back for good?

The black mold in your wardrobe is likely caused by condensation from the AC's cold air meeting the warm, humid air infiltrating from the outside wall—a common issue in Dubai's climate. The first step is to identify and address the moisture source, which is more critical than just cleaning the visible growth.

For a small patch (under one square foot), you can clean it yourself with a solution of white vinegar or a diluted bleach mix (1 part bleach to 10 parts water). Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, let the solution sit, then wipe it dry. However, this only removes surface mold; hidden growth within the wall cavity is a possibility.

Preventing recurrence requires controlling humidity. Ensure your AC is set to a consistently cool temperature to reduce condensation, and use a dehumidifier in the room if possible. Improve air circulation around the wardrobe by not overpacking it and occasionally leaving the doors open. For the exterior wall, check for cracks or gaps in the sealant and have them repaired to block humid air ingress.

Given the mold is on an outside wall in a villa, a professional inspection is highly recommended. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate hidden dampness within the wall that you cannot see. In many cases, the wall itself may need to be opened, treated, and insulated properly to create a permanent barrier. A company with its own microbiology lab can also test the mold to identify the species, which informs the correct remediation protocol and confirms it is not a more hazardous type.
