Black fuzzy mold in closet: DIY or professional in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots spreading along the ceiling in our walk-in closet. It’s on the wall that faces the outside, and with all the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse. What’s the fastest way to deal with this properly and safely in Dubai, and should I call a professional or is it a DIY job?

That black fuzzy growth is likely mold, and its location on an exterior wall suggests a condensation issue, which is extremely common in Dubai's climate. The high humidity, combined with cold air from your AC meeting the warm wall surface, creates the perfect damp environment for mold to thrive.
For a small area (less than one square meter), you can attempt to clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and eye protection. Scrub the area with a mixture of detergent and water, then disinfect with a solution of one part white vinegar to four parts water. Do not use bleach, as it only removes the colour and can worsen indoor air quality. The critical step is to fix the moisture source. Increase ventilation in the closet, ensure your AC is set to a consistent temperature to reduce condensation, and use a dehumidifier or moisture absorber. Given that it's spreading and on a porous surface like drywall, a professional assessment is strongly recommended. The mold may have penetrated deeper than what's visible. Proper remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and safely removing contaminated materials. An expert can also identify any underlying construction issues allowing moisture ingress. A certified inspector can take samples for lab analysis to confirm the species, which dictates the precise remediation protocol, especially important if household members have allergies or respiratory sensitivities. |
