Persistent black shower mold: DIY fix or professional needed?« Back to Previous Page
|
The grout between the tiles in my master bathroom shower has been getting these black spots for the past couple of months, and the damp smell is starting to linger in the towels. I've tried scrubbing it with bleach spray but it just comes back a week later. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger product, or do I need to call in a professional cleaning company to stop it for good?

That black mold in shower grout is a very common issue in Dubai, largely due to the high ambient humidity and constant use of AC, which creates significant temperature differentials and condensation. Bleach only bleaches the surface of the mold and does not kill the root structure penetrating the porous grout, which is why it returns so quickly.
For a DIY attempt, skip bleach. Use a dedicated, thick gel-based mold remover containing hydrogen peroxide or a quaternary ammonium compound, as these can penetrate deeper. Scrub it in and let it sit for the full recommended time. Crucially, you must address the moisture source. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it is actually venting outside. Wipe down the shower walls and squeegee the floor to remove standing water. If the mold reappears after this targeted DIY approach, the colony is likely established deep within the grout or even behind the tiles. At this point, professional assessment is needed. Persistent mold and a lingering damp smell can indicate a hidden moisture problem that surface cleaning cannot fix. A professional inspection can identify if there is a leak in the waterproofing membrane or poor ventilation requiring remediation, not just cleaning. They use industry-grade biocides and sealing techniques to provide a longer-lasting solution. |
