Is this mold dangerous for my kids in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the heavy rains last month, and I just found a patch of black and green fuzzy spots behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. We live in an older building in Jumeirah and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC on. Is this the kind of mold that's really dangerous, and who should I call to get it properly tested and removed in Dubai?

The type and concentration of the mold determine the risk. Heavy rains in Dubai often lead to leaks and trapped moisture, especially in older buildings with less ventilation. The fuzzy black and green growth you describe, combined with persistent coughing, strongly indicates an indoor air quality issue that needs immediate professional attention.

For children, prolonged exposure to any mold can irritate the respiratory system, worsening allergies and asthma. The constant damp feeling suggests a persistent moisture problem that the AC alone cannot resolve, as ACs can sometimes spread spores if contaminated.

You need a two-step process: inspection and remediation. First, contact a certified mold inspector who can take air and surface samples for analysis at an accredited microbiology lab. This is the only way to identify the species (like Aspergillus or Cladosporium) and the spore count in the air your children are breathing. They will locate all moisture sources.

Once you have the lab report, hire a separate remediation company to fix the water intrusion, contain the area, and safely remove the mold. In Dubai, reputable providers should offer detailed scopes of work, follow international guidelines like the IICRC S520, and provide verifiable before-and-after test results to prove the environment has been restored to a safe condition. Do not attempt to remove it yourself, as this can aerosolize the spores and worsen the problem.
