Can I fix this mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our master bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the wall for a couple of weeks and now there's a spreading black patch in the corner that smells damp. I tried wiping it with vinegar, but it came right back. Is this something I can handle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call a professional company to get rid of it for good?

That black patch and damp smell indicate active mold growth, which is a common issue here due to our high humidity and constant AC use. Since wiping with vinegar failed and the leak has been ongoing, this is likely more than a surface issue. The moisture has probably penetrated the wall cavity, and the mold is growing on the drywall or insulation behind.

For a small surface area, a thorough DIY cleaning with a dedicated mold remover (not just vinegar) can work if the moisture source is completely fixed first. However, your situation involves a persistent water leak, which is the root cause. Until the AC leak is repaired by a qualified HVAC technician, any cleaning will only be temporary. The mold will return.

Given the leak has been active for weeks and the stain is spreading, I recommend a professional assessment. They can use moisture meters to determine the extent of water damage inside the wall and identify the exact mold type. In many Dubai villas and apartments, this level of moisture intrusion requires cutting out and replacing the affected drywall to properly remediate the mold colony and prevent it from affecting your indoor air quality. Addressing both the AC leak and the resultant damage is key to a permanent solution.
