How to permanently remove damp smell from closet?« Back to Previous Page

Our master bedroom closet in our Jumeirah Park villa has started to get a really strong, damp smell, especially on the clothes. We had a small leak from the ensuite shower last winter that was fixed, but I'm worried the moisture got into the walls. What's the best way to completely eliminate this smell and prevent any mold from growing back there for good?

That damp smell in your closet is almost certainly trapped moisture, and in Dubai's climate, it won't resolve itself. The fixed shower leak likely left residual dampness inside the wall cavity or under the flooring, which is now off-gassing and permeating your belongings. Permanent removal requires addressing the source, not just masking the odor.

Start by removing everything from the closet. Wash or dry-clean all affected clothing and fabrics. With the closet empty, inspect for any visible mold growth on walls, baseboards, or the back of shelves. Wipe all surfaces with a diluted white vinegar solution, which can help neutralize odors and surface microbes.

However, since the leak was inside the wall, surface cleaning is unlikely to be sufficient. The core issue is likely hidden moisture within the structure. For a permanent fix, you need to verify the wall cavity is dry. A professional inspection using a moisture meter is the most reliable way to assess this. They can detect dampness you can't see and determine if the drywall or insulation needs replacement.

To prevent recurrence, ensure the closet has adequate airflow. Leave the door ajar periodically and consider a small, battery-operated dehumidifier or moisture absorber designed for enclosed spaces. In a Jumeirah Park villa with year-round AC, also check that the cold air supply vent isn't causing excessive condensation within that closed space. A proper remediation will seal the area from the previous leak source and ensure the structure is completely dry before being closed up again.
