Can I remove recurring mold myself or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

The wall behind our sofa in the living room has started showing these black speckles, and I’m pretty sure it’s mold. It’s been extra humid lately and that wall is an exterior one. I wiped it with vinegar but it came back after a few days. Is this something I can tackle myself with a stronger cleaner, or do I need to call in a professional?

Recurring mold after a DIY cleaning like vinegar is a clear sign the issue is not just surface-level. In Dubai's climate, exterior walls are prime locations for condensation due to the extreme outdoor heat meeting cooled indoor air, creating persistent dampness inside the wall cavity.

For a small patch (under one square meter), you can attempt a more thorough remediation. Use a solution of diluted detergent or a dedicated mold remover, scrubbing thoroughly. However, the critical step is to identify and stop the moisture source. This is often hidden condensation within the wall or a minor leak.

If it returns a second time, the mold has likely penetrated the porous wall material (paint, plaster, drywall) and the moisture source is unresolved. Professional assessment is needed at this stage. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find the hidden dampness causing the problem. Remediation then involves removing affected materials, treating the area with antimicrobial solutions, and most importantly, correcting the humidity or condensation issue to prevent recurrence. Without addressing the root cause, any cleaning is temporary.
