Is this black mold in my Mirdif villa dangerous?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing non-stop since the summer started, and I just found patches of black, fuzzy stuff behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. We live in a villa in Mirdif and I’m worried the high humidity is making it worse. Is this the dangerous black mold I keep hearing about, and who can I call to get it properly tested and removed?

The black patches you've found could be Stachybotrys chartarum, often called "toxic black mold," but many common black-colored molds like Cladosporium or Aspergillus look similar. True Stachybotrys is less common but produces mycotoxins that can cause persistent coughing, headaches, and fatigue, particularly in children and those with allergies.

Given your villa's location in Mirdif, the high summer humidity is a significant contributing factor. This environment, combined with condensation from year-round AC use, creates ideal conditions for mold growth behind furniture and inside walls. Your children's symptoms are a major red flag that this environment is affecting their health.

For your safety, do not attempt to disturb or clean it yourself, as this can aerosolize spores and worsen the problem. You need a professional inspection. In Dubai, reputable indoor health companies use borescopes to see inside cavities and moisture meters to find the water source. The only way to confirm the species and its risk level is through a lab analysis of a tape-lift or air sample.

Remediation must address the root cause—the moisture—and then safely remove the contaminated materials following standards like the IICRC S520. Look for a provider that is certified and can provide you with verifiable before-and-after lab reports to confirm the environment has been returned to a safe state.
