Can I remove black bathroom mold myself with vinegar?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed this black, fuzzy mold spreading in the grout between the wall tiles behind our toilet in Marina. It’s been so humid lately that the bathroom fan can’t keep up. Is this something I can tackle with a vinegar spray from the supermarket, or do I need to call a professional cleaning service for it?

For a small patch of surface mold in bathroom grout, a vinegar spray can be effective for immediate removal. The acetic acid in vinegar can kill many common mold types. Scrub the area with a stiff brush after letting the vinegar sit for an hour, then dry it thoroughly.
However, given your location in the Marina and the persistent high humidity overwhelming your fan, the mold is likely to return quickly. This climate creates a constant source of moisture that DIY solutions cannot address. The key is not just killing the visible growth but fixing the moisture problem. If the mold covers an area larger than a square meter, has a musty odor, or if you see discoloration on drywall or ceilings, it’s time for a professional assessment. In these cases, the mold may have spread behind the tiles where you can't see it. A proper inspection uses moisture meters and borescopes to find the hidden extent of the problem, which is common in Dubai's buildings due to condensation from year-round AC use. Remediation then focuses on stopping the moisture source and properly removing the contaminated materials. |
