Best way to permanently stop mold in a damp bedroom?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing and I suspect it's because of the black mold I just found behind our bedroom wardrobe in Khalifa City. We run the AC constantly but the room still feels damp, and this is the second time it's appeared since winter. What's the best long-term solution to stop this from coming back, like a specific dehumidifier or a type of paint we should use?

Khalifa City's high humidity and constant AC use create the perfect storm for this issue. The AC cools the air, but without adequate dehumidification, condensation forms on cold surfaces and behind furniture, leading to the recurring mold you're seeing. The first step is to address the root cause of the moisture.

For a long-term solution, start with improving air circulation. Move the wardrobe slightly away from the wall to allow air to flow behind it. Ensure the room's AC vents are not obstructed and that the unit is set to a "dry" mode if available, which prioritizes dehumidification over cooling. A standalone dehumidifier is highly effective for damp bedrooms; aim for a model with a capacity suitable for the room's size and a built-in hygrometer to maintain humidity levels below 60%, the threshold where mold growth is significantly inhibited.

Regarding paint, use a mold-inhibiting primer like a shellac-based or dedicated antimicrobial primer on the cleaned area before repainting. For the top coat, specify a high-quality bathroom or kitchen paint with mold-resistant properties, as these are formulated for high-moisture environments.

However, since this is a recurring issue and you have health concerns, a professional inspection is strongly recommended. They can identify if there's a more serious underlying problem, such as a small plumbing leak in the wall or insufficient insulation causing excessive condensation. For a verified resolution, the cleaning and application of specialized coatings are best handled by a remediation company that can provide before-and-after lab testing to confirm the mold spore count has been returned to safe levels.
