Is closet mold urgent with a toddler next door?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots forming in the corner of our master bedroom closet. I’m worried because my toddler’s room is right next door and she’s had a bit of a runny nose lately. I know it’s been extra humid the last few weeks. Is this something I need to get looked at immediately or can it wait until the weekend?

Closet mold with a toddler nearby does warrant prompt attention. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the presence of a young child, whose immune system is still developing, elevates the potential for health impacts like persistent runny noses, congestion, or skin irritation.

The small black spots are a visible sign of a moisture issue, likely from condensation trapped in the enclosed closet space, a common problem in air-conditioned homes here. Your first step is to clean the visible mold with a microfiber cloth dampened with a diluted detergent solution. Immediately dry the area thoroughly. Improve air circulation by leaving the closet door ajar and consider using a moisture absorber like silica gel.

However, cleaning the surface may not address the root cause if moisture has penetrated the wall. Given the proximity to your toddler's room, a professional inspection is a prudent step. They can use moisture meters to check the wall's internal humidity and, if necessary, perform air or surface sampling to identify the mold species. This diagnostic approach is crucial to determine if the mold is a type known to produce allergens or irritants that could be affecting your child. For peace of mind and to ensure the issue is fully resolved, getting it assessed before the weekend is a sensible precaution.
