What's the kid-safe way to remove mold under bathroom sealant?« Back to Previous Page

Our kids' bathroom in our villa in Jumeirah has had this persistent damp smell since the weather started getting really humid a few months back. I’ve just pulled back the silicone sealant around the shower and found a bunch of black and greenish mold growing underneath it, which has me really worried for my toddler and baby who bathe in there. What’s the most effective and kid-safe way to get rid of this for good without the fumes being dangerous for them?

Mold under silicone sealant is extremely common in Dubai's humid climate, especially in bathrooms where hot showers create condensation. The first step is to physically remove all the compromised sealant. Use a sharp utility knife or scraper to cut it out completely; simply cleaning over it will not work as the mold has penetrated the material.

For a kid-safe cleaning solution before reapplying new sealant, avoid harsh chemical fumes. A mixture of white vinegar and water or a paste of baking soda is effective for surface cleaning. For more stubborn growth, a solution of diluted hydrogen peroxide (3%) can be used. Ensure the room is extremely well-ventilated during this process—open windows and run the exhaust fan for several hours afterwards to clear any mild fumes before your children use the space.

Once the area is clean and bone dry, apply a high-quality, mold-resistant silicone sealant. In many villas, the underlying issue is poor ventilation. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and regularly wipe down wet surfaces to minimize condensation.

Given the persistent damp smell you describe, the mold growth might be more extensive behind the tiles or in the wall. For a toddler and baby's bathroom, a professional inspection can identify the full extent to ensure it's properly resolved. They can also perform air quality tests to confirm the space is safe, which is a common service for families in the UAE.
