Can I clean small AC mold myself or need professional?« Back to Previous Page

Our AC unit in the master bedroom has been leaking a bit of water onto the carpet for a couple of weeks. I’ve been wiping it up, but now I’ve pulled the carpet back and see a few small black patches of mold on the concrete underneath. It's not a huge area, maybe the size of a dinner plate, and I'm worried about our health. Is this something I can clean myself with vinegar or bleach, or do I absolutely need to call a professional company to handle it?

A small area of mold from an AC leak can sometimes be handled yourself if you address the moisture source first. The AC unit must be repaired to stop the ongoing leak; otherwise, the mold will return regardless of cleaning.

For a patch that size on concrete, a thorough cleaning with a vinegar solution is a common first step. However, in Dubai's high humidity, hidden moisture can be trapped in the carpet underlay and pad, which is a significant risk. The visible mold on the concrete is often just the tip of the iceberg.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended in this scenario. They use moisture meters to detect hidden dampness you cannot see and can assess if the carpet and underlay need replacement. They will also identify the mold species, as some types common in AC systems require specific remediation protocols for safety. The priority is ensuring the environment is fully dried and the AC is serviced to prevent future condensation issues, which are prevalent year-round here.
