Treat black mold in Dubai Marina apartment myself or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold in the corner of our master bedroom closet, the one on the outside wall. It wasn't there a month ago when I put away the winter clothes. With the recent humidity, it seems to have appeared out of nowhere and I'm worried it's spreading. What's the best way to treat this myself, or should I immediately contact my building management in Dubai Marina?

For a small, isolated patch in a closet, you can attempt to treat it yourself. The sudden appearance is a classic sign of Dubai's high humidity interacting with a cold surface, likely that outside wall, causing condensation. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. The critical step is addressing the moisture source; a dehumidifier or moisture absorber in that closet is essential to prevent immediate regrowth.

However, contacting your building management is also a prudent step. In Dubai, the responsibility for structural issues leading to mold, like a potential hidden leak in the wall or inadequate external waterproofing, typically falls on the property owner. They should dispatch their maintenance team to investigate the exterior wall and internal structure for the root cause.

Given its rapid appearance and location on an external wall, a professional inspection is highly recommended to rule out a more serious concealed problem. Surface cleaning is temporary if there's moisture within the wall cavity. A certified inspector can use moisture meters and thermal imaging to diagnose the extent of the issue beyond the visible patch, which is common in Dubai Marina's coastal climate. This provides the evidence needed for your building management to complete necessary repairs.
