Is this bedroom mold dangerous for my coughing kids?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing at night and I’ve just discovered a bunch of black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. We’ve lived in this apartment in Jumeirah for 2 years and just noticed it now after moving the furniture. With this humid weather, how urgently do I need to get a professional mold removal company involved, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

Yes, the mold is likely contributing to your children's coughing, especially at night when they're in that room. The combination of Dubai's high humidity and the stagnant air behind furniture creates an ideal breeding ground for mold. The black spots indicate an active colony, and its spores are now circulating in the bedroom's air, which is a common irritant for the respiratory system.

While you can clean a very small area (less than one square foot) yourself with a vinegar solution (avoid bleach as it doesn't kill the roots and its fumes are also an irritant), this situation requires professional assessment. The visible growth is just the surface; it often extends deeper into the drywall or behind it. Simply wiping the surface will not solve the problem and the mold will return.

In Dubai, the root cause is almost always a moisture issue—either from condensation from your AC unit, a small hidden leak, or humidity permeating the wall. A proper remediation process involves identifying and fixing that moisture source first, containing the area to prevent spore spread, safely removing contaminated materials, and using HEPA filtration to clean the air. For your children's health, it's prudent to get a professional inspection to understand the extent and type of mold present.
