Is AC mold urgent to fix myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle seems to be leaking a bit of water onto the carpet below the unit. I just pulled the carpet back this morning and found a patch of black and green mold about the size of a dinner plate. It’s been incredibly humid lately, and I’m worried it will spread quickly. How urgent is it that I get a professional to handle this, or can I tackle it myself with bleach this weekend?

That situation requires immediate attention. Given the visible size and the ongoing moisture from the AC leak, this is a professional-level job, not a DIY fix.
In Dubai's high humidity, mold can spread into the carpet backing and pad within days, and possibly into the subfloor. Bleach is ineffective on porous surfaces like carpet—it only bleaches the surface mold while leaving the root structure intact, and the water content can actually fuel further growth. The immediate priority is stopping the AC leak; a certified HVAC technician needs to address the root cause, which is likely a clogged drain line or low refrigerant. For the mold itself, a professional assessment is strongly advised. The species matters—some common types in AC systems, like Aspergillus, can cause significant respiratory irritation, especially for those with allergies or asthma. Remediation involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture spores, and properly disposing of contaminated porous materials like the carpet section and underlay. A reputable company will provide before-and-after lab reports to verify the spore count has been returned to safe levels, which is the only way to be certain the issue is resolved. |
