How to permanently remove mold behind wardrobe on outside wall?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe, which is on an outside wall facing the Marina. I’m guessing it’s from the humidity, but I’m worried about it spreading. What’s the most effective way to get rid of this mold for good without damaging the paint?

The mold behind your wardrobe is a classic symptom of Dubai's high humidity interacting with a cold surface. That outside wall facing the Marina is likely a "cold bridge," where condensation forms as the wall's temperature drops below the dew point, providing the constant moisture mold needs to grow.

For a permanent fix, simply wiping it is not enough. First, move the wardrobe away from the wall to allow air circulation. To clean, wear a mask and gloves. Wipe the area with a diluted white vinegar solution or a dedicated fungicidal cleaner, not bleach, as bleach only removes the colour and can damage paint. Let the area dry completely.

The critical step is addressing the moisture source. This is almost certainly due to condensation, not a leak. To prevent recurrence, you must improve insulation on that cold wall and increase ventilation. Consider applying anti-condensation paint or a thermal insulating layer before repainting. Keep the wardrobe a few inches from the wall permanently to allow air to flow behind it. A small dehumidifier in the room can also help manage ambient moisture levels.

If the mold covers more than one square meter, returns quickly after cleaning, or if anyone in the household experiences respiratory issues, a professional inspection is recommended. They can use thermal imaging to confirm the cold bridge and moisture meters to verify the wall is drying properly, ensuring the remediation is effective.
