Can I remove apartment closet mold myself or hire a pro?« Back to Previous Page

My bedroom closet in our Jumeirah apartment has started to feel damp, and I just found a bunch of black fuzzy spots on the back wall and on a couple of leather bags. It’s been worse since the humidity spiked a couple of weeks ago. Is this something I can clean myself with bleach or a vinegar solution, or do I need to call one of those professional mold remediation companies here?

Small, surface-level mold growth on non-porous materials can often be managed yourself. For the wall, a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner can be effective; bleach is not recommended as it doesn't kill the root and can worsen indoor air quality. The leather bags will require specific leather cleaners to avoid damage.

However, the damp feeling indicates a persistent moisture issue. In Dubai's climate, this is often due to a combination of high external humidity and a cold spot created by an AC duct running inside that wall, leading to condensation you cannot see. Simply wiping the surface will not stop it from returning.

A professional inspection is advised to identify the hidden moisture source. They use thermal imaging cameras to find condensation points and moisture meters to quantify the problem. For remediation, if the mold has penetrated the drywall or insulation, removal and replacement of the building materials is necessary to properly resolve it, which is a task for professionals. The goal is to fix the cause, not just the visible symptom.
