Is this AC mold a DIY fix or professional job?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my bedroom has been leaking a bit onto the carpet for a couple of months, and now I'm seeing these small black speckles spreading out from the unit. I've tried wiping it with vinegar, but the musty smell comes right back, especially when the AC kicks on. Is this something I can tackle myself with stronger cleaning products, or should I just call a professional mold remediation company in Dubai straight away?

Given the black speckles and persistent musty smell, this is almost certainly a professional job. In Dubai's high humidity, a leaky AC unit creates a continuous moisture source, allowing mold to grow not just on the carpet surface but deep within the underlay and potentially inside the AC unit and ductwork itself.

Vinegar and DIY cleaning products only address surface mold you can see. They do not kill the root structure (hyphae) penetrating porous materials like carpet fibers and padding. The immediate return of the smell confirms the colony is alive and actively releasing spores whenever the AC operates. Attempting a stronger DIY fix risks disturbing the colony and spreading spores throughout your bedroom.

A professional remediation company with IAQ (Indoor Air Quality) expertise should be called. The process involves isolating the area, using HEPA filtration to capture airborne spores, removing and properly disposing of the contaminated carpet section, and thoroughly cleaning the AC drip pan and drain line. Crucially, the leak itself must be repaired; otherwise, the mold will return. For a case involving an AC system, which can distribute spores, a verified approach with before-and-after testing is the only way to ensure the problem is resolved.
