Is this closet mold urgent or can I clean it?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside of our villa in Mirdif. With the humidity lately, I'm worried it's spreading behind the shelves. How urgently do I need to get a professional to look at this, or can I handle it myself with bleach?

This is likely active mold growth, which is very common in Dubai villas due to the high humidity and condensation on exterior walls. Since it's on an exterior wall and you suspect it's spreading behind the shelves, a professional assessment is strongly recommended.
You should not use bleach. It is mostly water, which can actually feed the mold roots embedded in porous surfaces like drywall, and it only bleaches the visible colour without addressing the underlying problem. For a small, surface-level patch, a solution of distilled white vinegar or a dedicated mold cleaner is more effective. The urgency stems from the location. An exterior wall in a humid climate suggests a potential thermal bridge or condensation issue, meaning the problem behind the wall could be significantly larger than the few visible spots. Spores can spread through your HVAC system. A proper inspection involves a moisture meter to check the wall's water content and often a borescope to see inside the wall cavity. For a case like this in Mirdif, getting it looked at within the next week or two is advisable to prevent further spread. If the drywall is saturated, remediation will involve removing the affected section to treat the cavity and address the condensation source. Companies with their own microbiology labs can provide culture analysis to identify the species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks and ensuring the correct remediation protocol is followed. |
