How can I safely remove mold from bathroom for toddler?« Back to Previous Page

Our family villa in Jumeirah has a shaded guest bathroom that always feels damp. Since the weather turned humid a couple of months ago, a black, speckled patch has been growing in the grout between the tiles behind the toilet. I’m really worried because my toddler loves to play on that cool floor and has been sneezing a lot more lately. What’s the safest and most effective way to clean this mold without using harsh chemicals that could harm my child?

Start with a simple cleaning solution of 1 part white vinegar to 1 part water in a spray bottle. For grout, baking soda mixed into a paste with a small amount of water can be gently scrubbed with an old toothbrush. These are non-toxic and effective for surface mold. Ensure the bathroom is well-ventilated during and after cleaning by running the exhaust fan and opening a window.

In Dubai's humid climate, this mold will return unless you address the moisture. That bathroom's constant dampness is likely from condensation due to the temperature difference between the cool tiles and the humid air, worsened by lack of sunlight. Run a dehumidifier or a small portable fan in the room after showers to dry it out completely. Consistently wiping down wet surfaces is crucial.

Given your toddler's increased sneezing and the mold's location where they play, the situation warrants caution. Surface cleaning may not address what's growing beneath the tiles or in the wall. For a persistent, recurring problem in a family villa, a professional inspection can identify the moisture source and the mold type. A lab analysis from the collected sample is the only way to confirm if the mold is a common, irritant type or something that requires more extensive remediation to ensure your indoor air is safe for your child.
