AC leak causing black mold - DIY or call maintenance?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in our Jumeirah apartment has been leaking a bit onto the carpet in the second bedroom, and now I’ve found a patch of black mold in the corner behind the wardrobe. It’s been humid the last few weeks and the damp smell is really strong. What’s the best way to handle this myself, or should I just call my building’s maintenance immediately?

Call your building's maintenance immediately to stop the AC leak at its source. This is the most critical first step, as continuous moisture will make any mold removal efforts temporary. In Dubai's high humidity, even a small leak creates a perfect environment for mold growth, and this is a landlord responsibility to fix.

For the mold itself, a small patch (under 1 square foot) on a non-porous surface like tile might be carefully cleaned with a vinegar or diluted bleach solution, but your situation is more complex. Mold on carpet and potentially inside the wall behind it is a serious concern. The strong damp smell indicates it's likely more widespread than the visible patch.

Given the location (behind a wardrobe) and the material (carpet and drywall), this is not a typical DIY job. Disturbing it incorrectly can release spores throughout your apartment. A professional inspection can determine the extent of the hidden damage and the specific mold type, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. In many Dubai apartments, this requires coordination with building management for proper access and repair.
