Can I clean recurring bathroom mold or need a professional?« Back to Previous Page

My bathroom's corner has had this black fuzzy mold growing for a couple of months, and it's getting worse since the weather got more humid. I live in an older building in Jumeirah and the ventilation isn't great. I've tried wiping it with bleach but it just comes back after a week.
Is this something I can handle with a stronger cleaning product from Ace Hardware, or is this a sign of a bigger problem where I need to call a professional?

Recurring mold in your bathroom, especially in an older Jumeirah building, is typically a symptom of a chronic moisture issue, not just a surface problem. The high humidity we experience, combined with poor ventilation and condensation from year-round AC use, creates a perfect breeding ground.
Bleach only removes the surface discoloration; it doesn't kill the root structure penetrating porous grout or behind tiles. A stronger cleaning product may offer a slightly longer reprieve but won't address the cause. The key is controlling humidity. Start by improving ventilation. Run your bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and ensure it's actually venting outside, not just into the ceiling void. Wipe down wet walls and tiles with a squeegee after use. A dehumidifier can also help measurably reduce ambient moisture. If the mold returns consistently despite these measures, the issue is likely deeper. Persistent growth, especially if the area is larger than one square foot, suggests moisture is trapped within the wall or under the flooring. This is a common scenario in buildings of a certain age where sealant has degraded. In such cases, professional assessment is needed to identify the hidden source—like a tiny pipe leak or failed waterproofing—and properly remediate it to prevent regrowth and potential structural damage. |
