Is urgent mold behind my wall a health risk?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's an interior wall and the room always feels a bit damp, even with the AC on. With the humidity lately, it seems to be getting worse by the day. How urgent is it that I get a professional to deal with this, and could it be affecting our health already?

Visible mold growth spreading on an interior wall with a persistent damp feeling is a definite health concern that should be addressed promptly. The constant high humidity in Dubai provides an ideal environment for mold to thrive, especially in poorly ventilated areas like behind furniture. The black spots are a clear sign of an active colony, and its proximity to your bedroom means you are likely being exposed to elevated spore levels.

This can absolutely affect health, typically presenting as increased allergy symptoms (sneezing, itchy eyes, congestion), sinus infections, asthma exacerbations, or general respiratory irritation. For individuals with compromised immune systems or existing respiratory conditions, the risk is higher. The musty odor often associated with such growth can also cause headaches and difficulty concentrating.

The urgency is high because the problem is actively worsening. The wall cavity itself may be harboring a much larger, hidden colony if there is a persistent moisture source, such as a small plumbing leak or condensation from an AC duct within the wall. Simply wiping the visible spots will not solve the underlying issue.

A professional inspection is strongly recommended. They will use moisture meters and borescopes to assess the wall's interior, identify the exact moisture source, and determine the extent of the infestation. Remediation involves fixing the moisture problem, then properly containing and removing the contaminated materials. In many cases, a lab analysis of the mold is advised to identify the species and inform the cleanup protocol, ensuring it is done to Dubai Municipality and international health and safety standards.
