Should I call a pro for small black ceiling mold?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a few small black spots forming on the ceiling in our master bedroom closet. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC has been struggling to keep up. I'm worried it's mold and I have no idea how quickly this spreads. Should I be calling a professional to deal with this immediately, or is it something I can clean myself this weekend?

Black spots on a ceiling in a Dubai bedroom are almost certainly mold, given our high humidity and the AC strain you've described. The constant condensation from an overworked AC unit creates the perfect damp environment for it to grow.
For a small area (under one square meter), you can likely handle it yourself. Wear an N95 mask, safety glasses, and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold-cleaning product, then let it dry completely. The critical step is fixing the source of moisture. Ensure the closet isn't overcrowded, allowing for air circulation, and check that your AC unit is draining properly and its filter is clean. A dehumidifier can also help significantly in enclosed spaces. However, you should call a professional for an inspection if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if the area is larger than a square meter, or if you notice a persistent musty smell. This indicates a deeper issue, like a leak in the ceiling or within the AC ductwork itself, that needs expert diagnosis. Professionals use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find hidden dampness and can provide lab analysis to identify the mold species, which is important for understanding any potential health risks. In many cases, a proper assessment is the only way to achieve a long-term solution. |
