Black mold in bedroom: clean or call landlord?« Back to Previous Page

Our building had some water leakage issues in the building next door a couple of weeks ago, and now I've just found a patch of black and fuzzy green mold spreading on the wall behind the wardrobe in my master bedroom. I'm really worried about it getting worse, especially with the humidity. What's the most effective way to clean this myself, or should I call my landlord first thing tomorrow?

Call your landlord first thing tomorrow. In the UAE, landlords are generally responsible for rectifying issues arising from building defects, including water intrusion from adjacent properties. This is not a simple surface cleaning task; the mold growth behind your wardrobe is a symptom of a moisture problem within the wall cavity, likely exacerbated by our high humidity.

Do not attempt to clean it yourself. Disturbing the mold without proper containment can aerosolize spores and spread the contamination throughout your bedroom and AC system. The landlord needs to arrange a professional inspection to identify the full extent of the water damage and mold growth inside the wall. A proper remediation plan will involve removing affected drywall, treating the structure, and ensuring the moisture source is permanently sealed.

Until it's addressed, keep the area undisturbed and the room well-ventilated. Run your AC on dry mode to help lower indoor humidity levels, a critical factor for mold growth here. The remediation company should provide post-clearance testing, often involving air or surface samples analyzed by a microbiology lab, to verify the space is truly safe before repairs are made.
