Safe DIY mold removal for kids' closet w/o chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing constantly since the holidays, and I just found patches of black and green mold in the back of their bedroom closet where we stored some winter clothes. We live in a villa in Mirdif, and I'm worried the humidity from the recent weather is making it worse. What's the safest and most effective way to get rid of this without exposing my family to harsh chemicals?

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), DIY with non-chemical methods can be effective. Start by isolating the area: close the closet door and cover the opening with plastic sheeting to contain spores. Wear an N95 mask, gloves, and goggles during the entire process.

Create a cleaning solution of white vinegar, which is effective against many common mould types found in humid climates. Do not mix it with bleach. Lightly spray the affected area and let it sit for an hour before scrubbing with a stiff brush. For porous surfaces like drywall or the backing of the closet, the mould often penetrates deeper than visible; scrubbing the surface may not be sufficient, and cutting out and replacing the affected section is the only guaranteed solution.

After cleaning, use a HEPA vacuum around the area to capture any disturbed spores. All contaminated materials, including the winter clothes, should be washed in hot water or professionally dry-cleaned.

The key is addressing the moisture source. In a Mirdif villa, this is likely high humidity or a condensation issue from the AC system. Run a dehumidifier in the room, ensure the AC is set to a consistently cool temperature to reduce condensation, and improve air circulation by leaving the closet doors open and using a fan. If the mould covers a larger area, has a persistent musty odour, or returns after cleaning, a professional inspection is strongly recommended to identify hidden moisture problems and assess the full extent. Improper handling can significantly increase spore exposure.
