Is closet cieling mold urgent to treat professionally?« Back to Previous Page

The ceiling in our master bedroom closet has a few small black spots that I’m pretty sure is mold. We’re in a ground-floor apartment in Jumeirah, and it’s been so humid lately that our windows are constantly fogged up in the morning. My wife has started getting a bit of a stuffy nose when she’s in the room. How urgent is it that we get this professionally treated, or can we handle it ourselves with bleach?

Given the humidity and your wife's symptoms, it's wise to treat this with urgency. The black spots are a clear sign of a moisture problem, and the stuffy nose indicates it's already affecting indoor air quality. In Dubai's climate, especially during humid periods, condensation is a primary driver for mold growth, and ground-floor apartments are more susceptible to dampness.

For a small area (under one square meter), you can attempt cleaning with a detergent solution, not bleach. Bleach only removes surface discoloration and does not address the root moisture issue, often causing mold to return stronger. However, self-treatment is not recommended if the drywall is soft or crumbling, as this indicates water saturation and the mold has likely penetrated deeply.

The critical first step is identifying and stopping the moisture source. In a closet, it's often condensation from a cold water pipe in the ceiling space or a small AC leak. Until the source is fixed, any cleaning is temporary.

Given the health symptom, a professional inspection is strongly advised. They can use moisture meters to find the exact source and assess the extent of the growth, which is often more widespread than it appears. For confirmed growth, remediation by a company with a microbiology lab ensures proper removal and post-clearance testing to verify the spore count has returned to a normal level, which is the only way to be certain the problem is resolved.
