How to safely clean and prevent wardrobe mold in Dubai?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots in the back of our bedroom wardrobe, which is on the wall facing the building's exterior. It’s been crazy humid this summer and I’m worried the AC isn’t keeping up. What’s the best way to clean this safely and are there any specific dehumidifiers or moisture absorbers that actually work well in a Dubai bedroom to stop it from coming back?

That black mould in your wardrobe is a classic Dubai issue, especially on exterior walls. The constant battle between the intense outdoor heat and your air-conditioned space creates a perfect environment for condensation inside your walls, which then leads to mould growth in hidden, poorly ventilated areas like wardrobes.
For safe cleaning, wear an N95 mask and gloves to avoid spore inhalation. A solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mould remover sprayed onto the area (never dry scrub) will kill the surface growth. Wipe it clean with a damp cloth and ensure the area is thoroughly dried. For porous materials like wood or drywall, the mould can penetrate deeply, making complete removal difficult. Prevention is about controlling humidity and improving airflow. The UAE's high ambient humidity means your AC must work efficiently to dehumidify; if it's not keeping up, it may need servicing. For a bedroom, a desiccant dehumidifier is often more effective than refrigerant models in Dubai's climate, as they perform better in the cooler temperatures of an air-conditioned room. Also, avoid overpacking the wardrobe and leave some space between your clothes and the wall to allow air to circulate. If the mould is extensive, has a strong musty odour, or returns quickly after cleaning, the moisture source is likely within the wall itself. In such cases, a professional inspection with thermal imaging and moisture meters is needed to identify the exact condensation point for a permanent solution. |
