Can I clean wall mold with vinegar or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

Our guest room in Jumeirah, which we hardly ever use, felt really damp when I went in there today to get something. I pulled back the curtain and found a bunch of black and green fuzzy spots spreading from the corner of the wall near the window. It’s been so humid lately that I guess the moisture just built up in there. Is this something I can clean with vinegar from Spinneys or do I need to call a professional cleaning company?

In Dubai's high humidity, that guest room's lack of AC use is the primary cause. The stagnant, uncooled air allows condensation to form on walls and windows, creating the perfect environment for mold. For a small patch under one square foot, a DIY approach can be effective.
Use a solution of distilled white vinegar and water. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area thoroughly, but avoid simply spreading the spores. The key is to address the moisture source. You must run the AC in that room consistently, even if unoccupied, to control humidity and prevent immediate recurrence. If the mold covers a larger area, has penetrated the drywall, or if there's a musty odor throughout the house, a professional inspection is needed. This indicates a more significant issue, possibly within the wall cavity. In such cases, surface cleaning is insufficient and improper handling can aerosolize spores. A certified inspector can identify the moisture intrusion point and the mold species, which dictates the correct remediation protocol. For persistent or large-scale problems, this diagnostic step is essential. |
