Urgent: Mold behind sofa, need professional or DIY cleaner?« Back to Previous Page

Our villa in Al Barsha has been feeling really humid lately, and I just pulled a sofa away from the wall in the living room to find a huge patch of black and green mold spreading behind it. We had some guests over a couple of weeks ago and the windows were foggy, but I didn't think much of it until now. With the summer humidity coming, how urgently do I need to get a professional to deal with this, or is it something I can handle myself with cleaners from the supermarket?

That discovery warrants immediate attention. Given the climate in Dubai, especially the high humidity we're entering, mold growth behind furniture is common but indicates a persistent moisture issue. The window condensation you noticed is a clear sign of elevated indoor humidity levels.

For a patch larger than roughly one square meter, professional remediation is strongly advised. Supermarket cleaners only address surface mold you can see, not the root moisture problem or the hyphae (root-like structures) growing into porous materials like drywall or plaster. In our climate, improper DIY treatment often leads to rapid regrowth.

The priority is identifying the moisture source. It could be external humidity condensing on cooler walls, an internal leak, or insufficient ventilation. A professional inspection uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the exact source, which is crucial for a permanent solution. For health safety during remediation, the area should be properly contained to prevent spores from spreading throughout your home's air.

Given this is in your living area, a lab test to identify the mold species can be valuable, particularly if anyone in the household has allergies or respiratory sensitivities. In many cases in Dubai villas, the solution involves targeted drying, antimicrobial treatment, and recommendations to manage indoor humidity year-round with your AC system.
