Could wall mold be causing my kids' constant cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop since we got back from summer vacation, and I just found black spots behind the wardrobe in our master bedroom. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and we live in an older building in Bur Dubai. Could this be mold from the humidity, and who can I call for a proper inspection to make sure it's safe for them?

It is very possible the wall mold and your children's cough are related. In Dubai's climate, the wall behind your wardrobe is a classic trouble spot. The exterior wall is often cooler from constant AC, and when humid air penetrates, it condenses on that cool surface, creating the perfect damp environment for mold to grow. The spores released can absolutely cause persistent respiratory irritation like coughing, especially in children.
For a situation involving health symptoms and visible growth, a professional inspection is the necessary next step. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing it can release a much larger number of spores into the air. You need a proper assessment to identify the mold type and the full extent of the problem, which often grows behind walls. Look for an indoor environmental professional who offers a comprehensive inspection that includes moisture mapping with a thermal camera and air/surface sampling sent to an accredited microbiology lab. The lab report will identify the species present, which determines the appropriate remediation response. In the UAE, reputable inspectors should be able to reference adherence to standards like the DM Guidelines or the Abu Dhabi EHSMS. This diagnostic approach provides the evidence needed to confirm the source and ensure it is resolved correctly for your family's health. |
