Black mold in bathroom: DIY fix or call management?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years in Jumeirah Village Circle and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing on the ceiling in the corner above the shower. It’s been extra humid lately and our bathroom window is tiny. What's the best way to tackle this myself before it gets worse, or should I call the building management right away?

That's a very common sight in Dubai bathrooms, especially during humid periods. The small window and constant steam from showers create a perfect environment for mold.

For a small patch you just noticed, a DIY approach is often effective. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of white vinegar or a dedicated mold remover. For porous surfaces like ceiling paint or grout, scrubbing may only remove surface mold. After cleaning, ensure the area is completely dry. Improving ventilation is critical; run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small dehumidifier.

If the mold covers a large area (generally more than one square meter), has a musty odor, or returns quickly after cleaning, it's time to call your building management. They are responsible for the structural integrity of the building. The mold might be growing due to a hidden leak in the plumbing or a roof issue that you cannot address. In such cases, a professional inspection is needed to find and fix the moisture source, as cleaning alone will be a temporary fix.
