Black fuzzy spots in closet; clean myself or call pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black, fuzzy spots in the back corner of our master bedroom closet where we store our winter clothes. It's on the wall that faces the outside, and it definitely wasn't there when I put the jackets away last spring. I'm worried it's from all the humidity lately, even with the AC running. What's the fastest way to get this properly cleaned and who should I call to check for a leak in the wall?

The black fuzzy spots are very likely active mold growth, a common issue in Dubai due to high humidity and the temperature differential between cold indoor air and warm exterior walls. This often leads to condensation inside, especially on poorly insulated external walls where closets are placed.

For a small, visible patch (under one square meter), you can clean it yourself. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a solution of detergent and water, then wipe with a diluted bleach solution (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) to disinfect. Dry the area completely with a fan. Discard any moldy clothing or items that cannot be thoroughly cleaned.

However, since the mold is on an external wall and reappeared after storing items, there is a high probability of a hidden moisture source, such as a small leak from AC condensation lines, faulty sealing around windows, or capillary seepage from recent rains. Surface cleaning will be temporary if the underlying moisture issue isn't resolved.

You should call a professional mold inspector or a reputable building maintenance company to conduct a proper assessment. They can use moisture meters and thermal imaging cameras to locate the source of the dampness within the wall cavity without causing unnecessary damage. In Dubai, addressing the root cause is essential to prevent recurrence, as the climate will constantly fuel new growth. A professional can also verify the mold type, though in damp building materials, Cladosporium or Aspergillus are frequently identified.
