Black mold in bathroom: health risk and safe removal?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived in our Jumeirah villa for 2 years and just noticed a patch of black mold growing in the corner where the shower meets the ceiling. My youngest has been having a runny nose and a cough that won't go away, and I'm starting to really worry it's connected. The bathroom doesn't have a window and the extractor fan seems pretty weak. What's the most effective and child-safe way to remove this mold for good, and should I be taking my kids to a doctor to get checked out?

Bathroom mold in Dubai is a common issue due to high humidity and condensation from year-round AC use. The health risk depends on the species and your family's sensitivity. For a child with a persistent cough and runny nose, it's wise to consult a pediatrician and mention the mold discovery. They can determine if an allergy or irritation is the cause.

For safe removal, first identify the source of moisture. A weak extractor fan is a primary culprit; it should run during and for 20 minutes after showers. For immediate cleaning on a non-porous surface like painted drywall, a solution of white vinegar or diluted bleach (1 part bleach to 10 parts water) can be effective. Wear an N95 mask and gloves, ensure the room is well-ventilated, and keep children away during the process.

However, if the mold has penetrated the ceiling material or covers an area larger than one square meter, professional remediation is recommended to prevent spores from spreading. The Dubai Municipality has guidelines for proper mold abatement to ensure it's handled safely. After removal, the key is preventing recurrence by controlling humidity. Consistently using a better extractor fan, wiping down wet surfaces, and occasionally leaving the bathroom door open to allow drier air from the AC to circulate are essential steps. For definitive identification and to understand the specific risk, a lab test can identify the mold species.
