Black mold in closet from humidity: DIY or call professional?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed some black speckles appearing in the corner of our master bedroom closet, which is on the interior wall facing the hallway. It's been incredibly humid the last few weeks and the AC has been struggling to keep up. Is this something I can tackle myself with a vinegar spray or do I need to call a professional mold inspection company to check for a bigger problem?

What you're describing is very common in Dubai's climate. That black speckling is likely surface mold feeding on the humidity. The interior wall location suggests condensation is the culprit, not a leak, especially with your AC struggling against the recent high humidity.

For a small, surface-level patch (under one square foot), a DIY approach can be effective. Wear a mask and gloves. Scrub the area with a mixture of white vinegar and water or a dedicated mold remover, then dry it thoroughly with a fan. The critical step is addressing the moisture source. Use a moisture absorber like silica gel in the closet and ensure the AC is serviced and set to a consistent, lower humidity level.

However, if the mold returns quickly after cleaning, if the area is larger than a square foot, or if you detect a musty odor permeating the room, a professional inspection is warranted. This recurrence indicates a persistent humidity problem within the wall cavity that DIY can't fix. A certified inspector uses moisture meters and thermal imaging to find hidden condensation points and can take air or surface samples for lab analysis to identify the mold species. This is crucial for understanding any potential health risks and for crafting a targeted remediation plan, not just a surface clean.
