Can I remove recurring bathroom mold or call a pro?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of black spots growing along the ceiling in our master bathroom, right above the shower. I tried wiping it with a bleach spray but it came back within a couple of weeks. I'm worried the humidity from our long showers is making it worse, especially with the current weather. Is this something I can tackle myself with a better product, or is it time to call a professional cleaning service to get it sorted for good?

Recurring black mold above the shower is a common issue in Dubai bathrooms, primarily driven by high humidity and condensation from hot showers. Since wiping with bleach only removed the surface stain and it returned, the fungal roots (hyphae) have likely penetrated the paint or ceiling material.

For a DIY approach, use a dedicated mold remover solution, not just bleach. These are formulated with surfactants to penetrate and kill the root structure. Thoroughly scrub the area, let the solution sit for the recommended time, and ensure the room is well-ventilated. The key to preventing recurrence is controlling humidity. Run the bathroom exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and consider a small desiccant dehumidifier. Wiping down wet surfaces immediately also helps.

If the mold returns after a second, thorough DIY treatment, or if the affected area is larger than one square meter, the problem may be more extensive. In many UAE villas, persistent bathroom mold can indicate a ventilation issue with the AC system or moisture trapped within the ceiling void from a slow pipe leak. At this point, a professional inspection is recommended to identify the underlying moisture source. A proper assessment includes moisture mapping and can determine if the mold is only superficial or has affected building materials, requiring remediation.
