Black mold in JVC apartment: DIY or call management?« Back to Previous Page
|
We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of fuzzy black spots growing along the bottom of the wall behind our sofa in the living room. It's a corner unit in Jumeirah Village Circle and I'm worried it’s from a slow leak because that wall feels slightly damp. What's the best way to deal with this ourselves, or should we immediately call our building management?

Black mold growth behind furniture in a JVC apartment is a common issue, often from condensation or a slow leak. The damp wall you describe is a major red flag indicating an active moisture source that must be addressed first.
In Dubai, building management is typically responsible for fixing structural leaks within the walls or from external sources. You should immediately report this to them with clear photos. Documenting the issue formally is crucial. They are obligated under Dubai Municipality regulations to investigate and repair the source of the intrusion. Do not attempt a significant DIY cleanup on a damp wall. Disturbing the mold can spread spores, and cleaning the surface is useless until the leak is permanently sealed. For a small area, you can wipe it with a diluted detergent solution to monitor growth, but this is only a temporary measure. Once the leak is confirmed and repaired by management, a professional assessment is wise to check for hidden mold inside the wall cavity. The high humidity here means mold can regrow quickly if not fully remediated. A proper inspection includes moisture meters and, if needed, lab testing to identify the species, as not all black mold is the highly toxic Stachybotrys. The remediation process itself should involve containment and HEPA filtration to prevent cross-contamination throughout your apartment. |
