Black spots behind wardrobe: urgent professional needed?« Back to Previous Page

We've lived here for 2 years and just noticed a bunch of small black spots forming on the wall behind our bedroom wardrobe. It's on an interior wall in our apartment in Jumeirah Village Circle, not near any windows. I'm worried because my husband has started waking up with a stuffy nose. Is this something I need to get a professional to handle immediately, or can I just clean it myself with vinegar this weekend?

The black spots and your husband's symptoms strongly suggest a mold issue that needs immediate attention. Given the location on an interior wall in JVC, this is a classic sign of condensation buildup. The wall behind a large piece of furniture like a wardrobe is a cold spot with poor air circulation from your AC, allowing humidity from the Dubai air to condense and mold to grow.

Cleaning visible mold with vinegar is a temporary measure for very small, surface-level issues. It does not address the moisture source, so regrowth within weeks is highly likely. The combination of persistent symptoms and the location indicates a deeper problem within the wall cavity that you cannot see.

For this scenario, a professional inspection is advised. They will use a moisture meter to find the condensation source and a borescope to check inside the wall. The goal is to diagnose why moisture is accumulating there—often due to insufficient insulation or an AC airflow issue—and fix it. In many cases, this requires remediation, not just cleaning, to prevent ongoing health irritation and potential property damage.
