Safest way to remove black mold myself?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing nonstop for the past couple of weeks and I finally checked behind the wardrobe in their bedroom. I found a huge patch of black, fuzzy mold spreading on the wall, probably from the last time we had a leak. What’s the safest and fastest way to get rid of this myself without putting my family at risk?

The safest approach for a large patch of black mold is to first assess the severity. In Dubai's high humidity, mold can penetrate porous materials like drywall and insulation. If the patch is larger than one square meter, or if the wall feels soft or damp, the wall's structure is likely compromised and professional remediation is strongly advised to prevent cross-contamination and ensure it's handled to DHA and DM guidelines.
For a smaller, surface-level patch, you can proceed with extreme caution. First, isolate the area by sealing the room with plastic sheeting. Everyone, especially your children, should vacate the home during the process. Wear an N95 mask, goggles, and disposable gloves. Scrub the area with a dedicated microfiber cloth and a solution of detergent and water. Avoid bleach, as it doesn't kill the roots and its fumes are hazardous in an enclosed space. After cleaning, the area must be completely dried using a dehumidifier to prevent immediate regrowth. Dispose of all cleaning materials and any moldy items in sealed plastic bags. However, DIY cleaning only addresses the visible growth. The underlying moisture source must be fixed, or it will return. Given the persistent health symptoms, a professional inspection is prudent to identify the mold species and ensure the airborne spore count in your children's room has returned to a safe level, which a certified microbiology lab can measure. |
