Urgent: Is black mold in kids' room a DIY or pro job?« Back to Previous Page
|
My kids have been coughing for a couple of weeks and I just found a patch of black, fuzzy mold in the corner of their bedroom closet behind some boxes. We’re in a villa in Arabian Ranches and I’m worried because it’s been so humid lately. Is this something I need to call a professional to handle immediately, or can I clean it myself this weekend?

With the high humidity we've had and the presence of coughing children, this warrants immediate attention. Given its location in a closet, the visible patch is likely just the tip of the issue; the real concern is what’s growing inside the wall cavity from condensation or a slow leak.
For a small patch (under one square foot) on a non-porous surface, a careful DIY approach can work. Wear an N95 mask and gloves. Scrub with a detergent solution, not bleach, as bleach doesn't kill the roots on porous surfaces like drywall and can just bleach the colour, making it harder to track. Dry the area completely with a fan. However, if the mold is on the wall itself, has a strong musty odour, or returns after cleaning, the moisture source is still active and the wall is contaminated internally. In your villa's climate, the persistent humidity means the underlying cause must be identified and fixed, which is where a professional assessment is critical. They use moisture meters and thermal cameras to find the hidden source of water intrusion—often condensation from AC ducts in the ceiling or a small leak. They can also take an air or surface sample for a lab culture to confirm the mold type, as "black mold" is a colour, not a species. While Stachybotrys (the toxigenic type) is less common here, other black-coloured molds like Aspergillus niger are frequently identified in Dubai and can still cause significant respiratory irritation. For the health of your kids, starting with a professional inspection to assess the full extent and identify the moisture source is the most prudent course of action. DIY cleaning without solving the root cause will lead to rapid regrowth. |
