Is the mold in my house causing my kids' cough?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing for the past couple of weeks and I’m starting to worry. I just pulled our winter clothes out of the storage cupboard under the stairs and found a few of my jackets have dark green spots on them, and the whole space smells damp. We’re in a villa in Mirdif and I’m panicking about how serious this could be. How urgently do I need to get a professional mold inspection done, and could this be the reason for their coughs?

Mold is a likely contributor to your children's persistent coughs, especially in the Dubai climate. The damp, confined space you described is a textbook environment for mold growth, and the musty odor confirms active microbial activity. Airborne spores from that storage area can circulate through your villa’s AC system, irritating respiratory systems and worsening allergies or asthma.

Given the visible growth and health symptoms, a professional inspection is advised within the next few days. The goal is to identify the moisture source—often a small leak, condensation from AC ducting, or humidity seepage common in villa sub-floors—and assess the extent of the contamination. Do not attempt to clean it yourself, as disturbing the mold can release a large number of spores.

A proper inspection involves more than a visual check; it includes moisture mapping and, if necessary, air and surface sampling to be analyzed in a microbiology lab. This identifies the species present and helps determine the appropriate remediation strategy. For your family’s health, prioritize this assessment to get a clear picture of the problem and a science-based plan to resolve it.
