Safe DIY removal of bathroom mold without harsh chemicals?« Back to Previous Page

My kids have been coughing more than usual and I’m starting to worry it’s because of the black spots I’ve found in the grout between the tiles in our master bathroom. We’re in a villa in Springs and with the humidity lately, it’s gotten worse, especially behind the toilet where it’s always a bit damp. What’s the safest and most effective way to get rid of this myself without using harsh chemicals that could affect my family?

The black spots in your grout are likely mold or mildew, exacerbated by the high humidity in Dubai, especially in damp, low-ventilation areas like behind a toilet. For a small, surface-level area, a safe and effective DIY solution is a paste of baking soda and white vinegar. Scrub it into the grout with a stiff brush, let it sit for 10-15 minutes, then rinse. For persistent spots, a diluted solution of 3% hydrogen peroxide (one part peroxide to one part water) in a spray bottle is very effective; spray, let it sit for 10 minutes, then scrub and rinse. Always wear gloves and ensure the room is well-ventilated during the process.
The key to preventing regrowth is controlling moisture. Run your bathroom's exhaust fan for at least 30 minutes after every shower and wipe down wet tiles and surfaces. In a villa, check that your exhaust fan is actually venting to the outside and not just into the attic space. A dehumidifier can also help significantly between uses. If the mold is widespread, has a musty odor, or has penetrated behind the tiles, DIY cleaning will only address the surface issue. In such cases, or if the coughing persists after cleaning, a professional inspection is recommended to assess the extent and identify any hidden moisture sources, as the mold could be growing in the wall cavity. |
