How to permanently stop AC mold in humid Dubai apartments?« Back to Previous Page

The AC in my apartment seems to be leaving black speckles on the walls behind our bedroom furniture. We're in a high-rise in JBR and I know the humidity is a constant battle here. I wipe it down, but it just comes back a few weeks later. What's the most effective long-term solution to stop this mold from recurring?

The black speckles are almost certainly mold growth, fueled by condensation from your AC unit interacting with Dubai's high ambient humidity. The most effective long-term solution requires addressing both the visible growth and the underlying moisture source.

First, have a professional inspect and clean the AC unit itself. The internal cooling coils and drip pan are a primary moisture source; if they are clogged with microbial growth, they will continuously seed spores into your room. A thorough chemical cleaning of the entire system, not just the filters, is necessary to remove this reservoir.

Concurrently, you must control the condensation that allows the mold to grow on your walls. This is a common issue in JBR high-rises where exterior walls can become cold from constant AC use, causing moist air to condense on them. Improve air circulation behind furniture by moving it slightly away from the wall. Consider using a small, energy-efficient dehumidifier in the bedroom, as indoor humidity levels often remain high even with AC running.

For a lasting solution, a professional assessment is key to identify if there's a specific issue with your AC's drainage or insulation. They can perform surface and air sampling to identify the mold type and confirm the source is eliminated after remediation. Simply wiping the surface only addresses the symptom, not the cause, which is why it returns.
